Packing plan
Route: Huntington Beach, California (December) → Miami (January) → NYC (first half of February). About 2.5 months.
Lean men’s packing list: one suitcase + one backpack. Do laundry every 5–7 days, with one midweek shirt wash if needed. Choose neutral colors and quick-drying fabrics so the same clothes work for clinic and casual wear.
The core list excludes the “Only if needed” items. Existing checkmarks are preserved; a checked optional item can still stay home.
| Stop | Average daily high / low | What to prepare for |
|---|---|---|
| Huntington Beach, December | ~19°C / 9°C (66°F / 49°F) | Mild afternoons, chilly coastal evenings, possible rain; layers and a rain jacket. |
| Miami, January | ~25°C / 16°C (76°F / 61°F) | Warm days, cooler evenings and strong indoor air-conditioning; lightweight clothes plus a sweater. |
| NYC, February | ~6°C / −1°C (42°F / 30°F) | Cold, wind, and possible snow, sleet or rain; winter coat, thermals and waterproof footwear. |
These are rounded historical monthly averages, not forecasts or temperature limits. NYC cold spells can be much colder. Weather sources are linked below.
Clothes
Core wardrobe — clinic + casual
- 4 x men’s dress shirts — easy-care and breathable; wear casually too. Wash one midweek if needed for five clinical days.
- 2 x pairs of dark chinos / dress trousers — use for both clinic and leisure; if bringing a suit, count its trousers as one of these two pairs.
- 1 x belt. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 2 x T-shirts — casual wear, sleep or exercise; no separate casual long-sleeved tops needed.
- 1 x sweater / fleece — for California evenings, Miami air-conditioning and layering in NYC.
- 7 x pairs of underwear.
- 5 x pairs of everyday socks — plus two warm pairs below, seven pairs total.
- 1 x pair of shorts — use for Miami, leisure and workouts. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x lightweight set of sleepwear — a T-shirt and the shorts above can substitute. ✅ 2026-11-02
Shoes
- 1 x pair of comfortable walking shoes / sneakers — use for clinic too only if permitted. If professional shoes below can also handle long walks, bring those instead of a separate pair of sneakers. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x pair of lightweight shower sandals / slippers. ✅ 2026-11-02
Aim for one everyday pair + shower sandals, adding winter footwear only if the everyday pair is unsuitable for NYC.
NYC winter — keep these
- 1 x insulated winter coat — wind-resistant, preferably water-resistant, with room for the sweater. Wear/carry it on flights to save suitcase space. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x thermal base-layer set — long-sleeved top + leggings; wash during the NYC stay. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 2 x pairs of warm wool / thermal socks. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x warm hat covering the ears.
- 1 x pair of insulated gloves.
- 1 x compact neck warmer / scarf. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x pair of waterproof winter shoes / boots with good tread — only if your everyday shoes lack suitable waterproofing, warmth or grip. ✅ 2026-11-02
Buy the coat / winter footwear in the US before the NYC leg if that saves space on the first flight. Have them ready before arriving in NYC, and leave luggage room for the later flights. Do not cut winter protection to fit extra casual clothes.
Only if needed — not part of the core list
- 1 x suit — bring only for a confirmed interview / formal event or a host requirement; otherwise leave it home. Count its trousers toward the two pairs above. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x tie — only if required; no spares.
- 1 x pair of professional shoes — only if the everyday shoes above do not meet the host’s dress code; choose a comfortable pair that can replace the walking shoes.
- 1 x white coat — only if required and not supplied; confirm length/style. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 2 x sets of scrubs — only if personal scrubs are required and not supplied; confirm colors and laundering rules. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x workout outfit — use the T-shirts and shorts already counted above instead of packing extra sets. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x swimsuit — only if swimming is actually planned. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x packable rain shell — only if the coat is unsuitable for rain / mild-weather use and the forecast calls for it.
Clinical equipment
- 1 x stethoscope — only if required for your role; label it. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 2 x pens. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x small pocket notebook — optional; do not record patient-identifiable information in personal notes. ✅ 2026-11-02
Use your existing watch if needed. Bring a penlight or badge holder only if the host requests one and does not supply it. The backpack below doubles as your work bag. Skip extra instruments and textbooks.
Documents
Keep originals and one printed set of essential documents in your carry-on, with secure offline digital copies. Obtain English versions / translations where required.
Travel / identification
- 1 x valid passport — check the validity requirement for your nationality and travel dates; bring the previous passport too if it contains your valid visa. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x applicable US visa / travel authorization and supporting immigration documents. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 3 x rotation acceptance / invitation letters — dates, location and coordinator contact for each stop. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x itinerary with flight bookings, return/onward booking, accommodation addresses and check-in instructions.
- 1 x accessible copy of proof of funds / financial support, if requested at entry.
- 1 x emergency contact sheet — family, rotation coordinators, insurer and accommodation contacts.
- 1 x home-country driving license, plus an International Driving Permit / translation if required — only if driving; check state and rental-company rules.
Money and phone access
- 2 x internationally usable payment cards, preferably from different issuers — keep the backup separate. ✅ 2026-11-02
- A small amount of USD cash in small notes; avoid carrying the whole trip’s budget in cash.
- 1 x compact wallet / secure place for passport and cards. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x US SIM / eSIM plan for the whole trip — confirm your phone is unlocked and compatible; choose a plan with a US number if your hosts need calls/texts. ✅ 2026-11-02
- Access to your home SIM / bank verification method — check roaming and SMS/2FA access before leaving. ✅ 2026-11-02
Electronics
- 1 x phone. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x laptop or tablet — choose the one you use for onboarding, email and study. ✅ 2026-11-02
- Chargers + essential cables — use one multiport USB-C charger for phone/laptop if its power output and compatibility support both; otherwise bring the chargers they need. No spare chargers. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x US plug adapter, if needed — Type A/B, usually 120 V / 60 Hz. Check appliances for 100–240 V input; an adapter does not convert voltage. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x earbuds — use your existing pair. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x small power bank — optional if your phone lasts all day. Check airline limits; preferably no more than 100 Wh with a readable label. Carry-on only, even if your bag is gate-checked. ✅ 2026-11-02
Medicines and personal health
- Enough regular prescription medicine for the ~75-day stay, within the import limits for each medicine — keep it in original labeled packaging and in your carry-on. ✅ 2026-11-02
- A few adhesive bandages / blister dressings — no bulky first-aid kit.
- 1 x pair of prescription glasses + spare pair, if used. ✅ 2026-11-02
- Enough contact lenses, if used, plus a starter bottle of solution; buy more solution locally.
- A few spare masks for travel / arrival; use the host’s required PPE at clinical sites.
Toiletries
Bring about one week’s supply; buy full-size toiletries in the US rather than packing 2.5 months’ worth.
- 1 x toothbrush, small toothpaste and floss. ✅ 2026-11-02
- Small shampoo / body wash + deodorant — skip shampoo and body wash if your first accommodation supplies them. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x small broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen.
- 1 x razor or compact electric shaver, plus comb and nail clippers — one shaving tool, not both. ✅ 2026-11-02
Bags and daily essentials
- 1 x suitcase — check the smallest size/weight allowance across all flights; leave space for any winter gear bought later. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x backpack — plane personal item + daily work bag; check airline dimensions and locker fit. No separate work bag. ✅ 2026-11-02
- 1 x thin laundry bag / reusable bag — no need to buy packing cubes.
- 1 x pair of sunglasses. ✅ 2026-11-02
- Luggage tags with contact details.
Leave out: extra jeans/casual trousers, extra sweaters, separate casual long-sleeved tops, duplicate workout clothes, spare chargers, textbooks and unrequested medical instruments.
Buy locally if needed: umbrella, water bottle, lunch container, laundry detergent, toiletry refills and a towel if housing does not supply one. No need to pack these from home.
Prepare before departure
- Confirm with your hosts and the US consulate that your entry category permits the specific elective / observership activities planned; do not assume a tourist visa or ESTA covers every clinical placement.
- Finish onboarding before travel; check whether health forms / TB screening remain valid through the January and February rotations.
- Confirm health insurance covers your planned clinical activities, occupational exposures / needlestick care and any relevant pre-existing conditions; check deductibles and emergency assistance details.
- Confirm malpractice coverage separately from personal health / travel insurance.
- Ask each coordinator about first-day location/time, dress code, white coat, scrub colors, supplied equipment, badge access and required apps / logins.
- Confirm housing has laundry, bedding, towels and heating for NYC; the smaller wardrobe depends on reliable laundry access.
- Plan the commute at each stop — especially Huntington Beach; if renting a car, check license acceptance, age restrictions, insurance and deposit-card requirements.
- Set up maps, transport/payment apps, bank access and hospital multi-factor authentication before leaving; save key information offline.
- Check the forecast shortly before each city transfer, not just before the international flight.
Carry-on / customs check
- Keep passport, entry documents, rotation letters, medicines, glasses, valuables and essential electronics in your carry-on.
- Put one change of clothes, including one clinical outfit, in your carry-on in case checked luggage is delayed — take it from the quantities above, not an extra outfit.
- Pack power banks and spare lithium batteries in the cabin, protected from damage / short circuits; remove them if your cabin bag is gate-checked.
- Keep ordinary carry-on liquids/gels in containers 100 mL / 3.4 oz or smaller, all inside one clear quart-size bag. Medically necessary liquids have separate TSA provisions; tell the officer at screening.
- Declare all food / agricultural products on arrival. Skip meat snacks, fresh fruit and seeds unless you have checked the specific entry rules; declaration does not make prohibited food admissible.
- Leave prohibited / unnecessary sharp instruments at home; check airline and security rules for anything unusual.
