Etiology
- Ovarian enlargement is the most important risk factor; common causes include:
- Ovarian cysts

 - Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome
 - Pregnancy
 
 - Strenuous physical activity

Twisting of the ovary and the fallopian tube around the infundibulopelvic ligament and ovarian ligament
