-
Anabolic
- Meaning: “Building up” processes. Building complex molecules from simpler ones (requiring energy).
- ANA- = Add/Ascent (building up)
- NADPH: Used for Anabolic processes (Building up) and Redox defense.
- Production: HMP Shunt (via G6PD).
- Consumption:
- Synthesis: Fatty acids, Cholesterol, Nucleotides.
- Protection: Reducing Glutathione (prevents oxidative stress).
- Immune: Respiratory Burst (NADPH Oxidase) in neutrophils.
-
Catabolic
- Meaning: “Breaking down” processes. Breaking down molecules (releasing energy).
- CATA- = Collapse/Crash (breaking down)
- NADH: Used for Catabolic processes (Breaking down) to make ATP.
- Production: Glycolysis, TCA Cycle, Fatty Acid -oxidation.
- Consumption: Electron Transport Chain (Complex I) to generate ATP, Anaerobic Glycolysis, Gluconeogenesis
